In 2009 Alexander Klatt, the VP of Design at Fisker Automotive, approached me to deliver the Karma's touch panel and digital driver instruments. Long before Tesla's Model S debuted their 17 inch screen, the Karma had introduced a full touch panel solution for automotive controls. This product resolved a situation where typical automotive center panel controls could not fit in the Karma's Instrument Panel due to the battery below and HVAC system behind.
The design of the system was a Fisker branded UI with a play on the mixture between the intangible nature of digital and the tangible nature of typical automotive controls.
Every system was uniquely designed for its beauty not necessarily to follow UX conventions. An orientation towards Bauhaus design principles and classic composition influenced the final design.
